Preservation Hall Jazz Band

When: Wed., March 26 2014
PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

This long-running outfit takes its name from the French Quarter institution that’s been celebrating the origins of brass band jazz for more than five decades. Key to its keeper-of-the-flame-status is the wide range of players from different eras —birthdates range from the 1930s to the late-’70s — and the blend that comes from a variety of musical backgrounds. And while the city’s musical legacy has been the primary purview, the band’s recent releases suggest a new musical directions. Look no further than the ensemble’s first all-originals release, co-produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, last year’s That’s It! The songs don’t abandon their hot jazz DNA, but incorporate new layers, arrangements and structures, honoring everything from the music’s gospel foundations to its links in the swing jazz era and beyond (the title track recalls Benny Goodman’s fiery version of Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing).” (John Schacht)
