Purple Note 3 - Celebrating The Life of Prince Through Jazz: Harvey Cummings II & Friends, That Guy Smitty

When: Thu., June 7, 7:30 p.m. 2018
Harvey Cummings II and his band pay a jazz-inflected tribute to Minneapolis' most famous son, while That Guy Smitty provides a DJ set. If you're a true Prince fan, you know that the purple one loved jazz. Released in 2003, Prince's "Xpectation" is a jazz ensemble piece, featuring John Blackwell on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass , Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer and violin prodigy Vanessa Mae. It's less a collection of songs than a swinging suite and mood piece. Then there's Prince's side project Madhouse, a Minneapolis jazz fusion band that released two albums in 1987. Still doubt Prince's jazz cred? Consider that his father John L. Nelson was a Jazz musician, with the stage name ‘Prince Rogers’, a name that descended directly to the son — ‘Prince Rogers Nelson’.
