Quiet Company, The Tontons, Driver Friendly
Led by sultry-voiced singer Asli Omar, this Houston-based quartet has landed on a pretty solid blend of soul and alterna-rock on their sophomore release, Make Out King and Other Stories of Love. Some tunes feature B3 washes contrasting with spiky guitar riffs and propulsive beats; others are more laid-back, emphasizing a bit of Sade in Omar’s delivery. When the band pulls back a bit, it’s easy to see why they’ve landed high praise from Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and others. (John Schacht)
