The Uptown park opened in 2013 to a crowd of people and dogs, who found cool in the grounds’ water sprinklers and comfort along the benches. But what really makes this park so special is its location. You won’t find any big shady trees here, but surrounding skyscrapers make up for that. The park honors Charlotte-born collage artist Romare Bearden, whom you can read more about on various signage around the park. The two-day Romare Fest is a fine time to get better acquainted with the park. The event is slated to feature live music and performances throughout the day. (Anita Overcash)
