Sure, they are an old-timey roots band, and have been making “original American dance music” for a quarter century, but there’s also sinewy reggae, jazz, folk, Cajun, zydeco and drizzles of pop woven throughout their wonderfully varied catalog of recordings. After their prim and polished studio album, Silverlined, released five years ago, the new one, Tonight, Tomorrow and Yesterday, is a live-to-analog gem recorded in a church in rural New York. The minimally produced album has a certain warmth and immediacy to it, as if the band is playing a house concert while sitting on the front porch. (Samir Shukla)
