BUDOS BAND
The resurgence in trad soul can be traced, at least commercially speaking, to the Brooklyn doorsteps of the Daptone House of Soul. It’s in that studio that once-forgotten artists like Sharon Jones, Lee Fields and Charles Bradley have had their singing careers resuscitated with the help of beard- and beanie-sporting millennials providing back-up for these experienced singers. Jones’ success helped spread the resurgent sound nationally, and Amy Winehouse, who tapped the Dap-Kings for her 2006 LP, Back to Black, helped bring greasy soul back into the international limelight. The backing bands splintered into different entities — Antibalas, Budos Band, the Menahan Street Band — each with intriguing twists on the funky formula. Builders of deep, psychedelic-tinged grooves, Budos Band artfully blends Super Fly-era Curtis Mayfield, James Brown and Booker T. and the MG’s into horn-fueled rave-ups, sprinkling in generous amounts of Éthiopiques funk for additional spice. They call the result Afro-Soul, but let’s not get bogged down in nomenclature — it’s impossible to sit still when this band finds the pocket, and they find it a lot.
