Outside of X, Social Distortion may be the late-’70s Southern California punk scene’s greatest success story — if, by success, you mean endurance and relevance over sales. Social Distortion kept the energy of SoCal hardcore while jettisoning the genre’s straitjacketed louder-faster sound. Instead, they embraced a bit of the ragged-but-right social commentary of The Clash and a touch of the hardscrabble country of Johnny Cash, forging their own punk-Americana hybrid.
