Why did it take last year’s The Electric Pinecones, an unconventional tribute to folk, acid-rock and moody 1960s psych-pop, to make people realize that Southern Culture on the Skids are so much more than a double-wide, chicken fried joke band? Maybe it was the Skids’ reckless yet good-natured boogie, or the fact that their satirical barbs belied genuine love for the lifestyles and obsessions the band parodied. Whatever. Fans in North Carolina have known they are an awesome band all along.
