There’s heavy — really just a shorthand for bands that crank their gain knobs to 10. Then there’s HEAVY — guitars tuned so low, fuzz pedals cranked so loud, amplifiers pushed so hard and tempos set so slow that it feels as if the sound is literally a weight on your chest. Oregon-via-Rhode Island bass-and-drum duo The Body is all-caps heavy, sure, but its punishing experimental doom metal surpasses smoky Sabbath worship and snail-paced sludge, stretching the limits of its sound through constant innovation and collaboration. Partnerships with acts like North Carolina expatriates Braveyoung (2011’s Nothing Passes), The Assembly of Light Choir (last year’s Christs, Redeemers) and terrifying electronic drone-scaper Haxan Cloak (the forthcoming I Shall Die Here) are bellwethers of The Body’s delirious pursuit of ever darker, ever forward-looking ways to deliver its brutality, enhancing rather than undercutting the duo’s soul-stirring intensity. The Body isn’t just louder or heavier than any metal act you’re likely to see. It’s also more inventive. (Patrick Wall)
