The Greencards

THE GREENCARDS

Formed by a trio of British and Australian ex-pats in 2003, invigorating Americana outfit The Greencards have undergone a transformation so smooth and organic that it’s hardly been noticed. Initially a fire-powered flatpicking combo on fiddle, mandolin, bass and bouzouki, The Greencards became the face of progressive bluegrass, earning plaudits (and collaborative input) from “newgrass” pioneer Sam Bush. Over time, this country-folk inspired crew toured with Dylan and Willie Nelson, dropped a founding member, added a few Yanks to the roster and subsumed its hot-shit instrumental chops into catchy yet quietly powerful tunes. New LP Sweetheart of the Sun is not a case of a group grown all “mature.” Instead, musical virtuosity underpins bassist Carol Young’s clear, Sandy Denny-flavored vocals in a song cycle that evokes Nick Drake, Alison Krauss and Paul McCartney’s Band on the Run. Yet, the Greencards’ clearest antecedent is the vigorous and harmonious folk rock of Denny’s old outfit, Fairport Convention. Like Fairport, the Greencards’ synthesis of precision and soulfulness produces timeless classics, songs that seem like they’ve always been with us. (Pat Moran)
