TYCHO

Tycho used to just be one dude, Scott Hansen, who’s also a pretty well-known graphic designer, under the nom de plume ISO50. But Awake, Tycho’s stellar 2014 record, finds Hansen expanding his once-solo project into a trio. Following a tour behind 2011’s Dive, which featured full-band renderings of that record’s hazy meditations, guitarist Zac Brown (no, not that Zac Brown) and drummer Rory O’Connor joined Hansen in the hills of Santa Cruz to help him finish his latest batch of songs. Augmenting Tycho’s lineup certainly didn’t dull Hansen’s vision; Awake is still filled with the breezily melancholic atmospheres (“Dye”) and winsome, foggy keyboards layered over mellow grooves (“L”; “Plains”) that characterized Tycho’s prior Ghostly International output. But bringing in extra musicians added a peak-and-valley naturalism to Tycho’s sprightly ambient pop without sacrificing its raw emotional content. Consider the lush, anthemic “Montana,” which shakes off Tycho’s erstwhile insularity by invoking sunsets painting the top of the Rocky Mountains that mark its namesake state. (Patrick Wall)
