Waiting for Mamu

Mamu is the Nepalese word for “mother,” and Waiting for Mamu is the true story of Pushpa Basnet, a social worker who has spent close to a decade serving as a maternal figure to over 200 children whose own parents have been locked up behind bars. As a 20-year-old university student in Kathmandu, Pushpa witnessed firsthand how kids were often jailed alongside their parents simply because there were no guardians or other responsible adults around. Spurred to action, she founded the Early Childhood Development Center and began to look after these children, feeding them, sending them to school and basically allowing them to be kids. Pushpa’s actions earned her a 2012 CNN citation as “Hero of the Year” and inspired Charlotte filmmaker Thomas Morgan to create a documentary short honoring her efforts. With Susan Sarandon serving as executive producer, Waiting for Mamu has already played in select cities and is now landing in Morgan’s hometown.
