On the heels of last week's screening of Miami Connection, the Back Alley Film Series now offers another forgotten film from the cult vaults. One of the first prominent titles in the Australian New Wave that reenergized that nation's film industry in the 1970s, this 1971 drama made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival before largely disappearing from sight. It finally resurfaced three years ago, when it was meticulously restored and subsequently introduced at Cannes by Martin Scorsese. Often described as an Aussie companion piece to Deliverance and Straw Dogs, the film focuses on a schoolteacher (Gary Bond) who finds himself stranded in a dusty town in the Outback; there, he becomes acquainted with the brutish locals (including a doctor, played by Donald Pleasence) and soon begins tapping into his own primitive state.
