Water Liars’ Americana is minimal, sure, but not stripped-down: rather, understated instrumentation brings songwriter Justin Kinkel-Schuster’s emotional, stark lyrics to the fore. Even when the band rocks out, as on “Backbone,” a fuzzy, surprisingly thick psychedelic riff gives way to swinging, downtrodden gospel-blues. There’s a welcome purity, almost, to Kinkel-Schuster’s defeatism. (Corbie Hill)
