Satish Cherian felt like Uptown was screaming for retail. To answer that cry, he recently opened O1NE (pronounced ONE), a skate-themed clothing boutique, on the corner of Trade and Mint streets.
"Truthfully, if I wasn't going to do the store in Uptown Charlotte, I wasn't going to do the store in Charlotte," says Cherian, originally from New Jersey. "I just feel like there's so much potential here, and there's no real retail. I feel like I'm bringing that whole boutique style here, with labels that are up and coming, that you don't see everywhere else. I've got some of the hottest brands, from New York, L.A., Sweden, Japan."
When you walk into the store, the first thing you'll notice is dozens of skateboards hung up on the wall. Cherian says that he's a skateboarder and just wants to add to the huge skate scene Charlotte already has here. "Basically bring that whole up north, east coast culture down here," he says.
Linda Moneta is good with play-on words. A Closet Full, her consignment shop located in the Pavilion at SouthEnd, caters to full-figured women sizes 14W-32W. The tagline for her store is also weight-related: "THIN out your closets and FATTEN your wallet by consigning your gently-worn clothing and accessories with A Closet Full."
A Closet Full has been serving plus-size Charlotte women for 17 years, with the Pavilion location its "4th and final." Moneta has moved the store on multiple occasions to try and best serve her customers, and she's found that South Boulevard is easily accessible from all areas of Charlotte.
On one of my weekly "shopping trips," I came across this cute little store in the Blakeney shopping center, Mud Pie Monograms and Gifts. When I walked in, three cheerful older women were moving around some displays.
One of the owners, Jeannine Williams, was kind enough to show me some of their popular selling items, such as these Reisenthel carry bags. ($51.99 including monograms)

Black Sheep Skate Shop
The Rat's Nest
This week's feature on consignment stores around Charlotte is on Century Vintage.
Plaza Midwood is home to Century Vintage, which has been open for 12 years. Owner Allison has owned it for eight. She got into the business because she couldnt stand to see things from the 1950s, '60s and '70s go to waste. We are like an adoption agency for cool stuff, she said.
Black Sheep manager Chase Doerflinger gives us a brief tour of the shop and tells us about the lines they carry. More info here.
If you're into limited edition sneakers and skateboarding, Black Sheep Skate Shop is the place for you. In a 2006 interview with Creative Loafing, co-owner Josh Frazier said, "Black Sheep represents someone who is free thinking and does his/ her own thing. That's the kind of clientele we cater to by stocking hard-to-find, limited-edition products and brands that are not readily available in the malls."

Check out the first in our weekly feature on consignment stores around Charlotte. This week, we checked out Sweet Repeats, located in the Dilworth area.
The economy may be in trouble, but that doesnt mean us girls have stopped shopping for nice things. It just means we arent willing to pay such a high price for them! That is where Sweet Repeats comes in. Located in the Dilworth area, Sweet Repeats has been in business since September of 1996. Realizing more space was needed for their growing boutique, the owners, sister-duo Jenny Burnett and Amy King, purchased the spot next door. The original store on the left is now deemed casual, and the space on the right, career. The consignment shop carries designers such as Nanette Lepore for the younger gals and St. John for the more mature women. You can also find the classics: Gucci, Prada, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Burnett is most proud of their handbag section. It certainly is drool-worthy. If you cant make a stop in to see the real thing, check out their new Web site to shop online at www.sweetrepeatsboutique.com.
