What a great headline.
Shoplifting is all too commonplace nowadays with the bad economy, but this might top the cake.
The Charlotte Observer reports that Antonio Dewayne Harris is accused of stealing air fresheners from a local Food Lion. The estimated total cost of air fresheners stolen? $140.
Police say they're familiar with Harris, a cross-dresser who's been locked up for shoplifting and stealing people's identities.
Now what a 24-year-old man who dresses like a woman needs with $140 worth of air fresheners is beyond me. Any ideas?
Forbes.com has a neat little slide show of 10 things you might want to purchase before the economy gets better. The no. 1 item? A house, of course.
At my part-time job, I have to wear a bow tie. It's not the most comfortable accessory, but it does draw attention to the neck. At least now I can be considered fashionably hip, at least according to this story on WSJ.com:
After years under the chins of the pocket-protector crowd, the bow tie is cool. It now appears on "Gossip Girl" characters, fashion runways and sports stars -- as well as young hipsters.
Five-finger discounts aren't just for teenagers anymore.
Managers at upscale shops say they're seeing more shoplifters than ever before as the country's cash flow problems force well-dressed and often monied women to find alternative ways to look good.

Proof that the dead can rise again.
The once-bankrupt electronics store is opening dozens of new stores (mostly in Florida), and operating with a new plan: Copy part of what made the Apple (AAPL) store successful.

As if SouthPark didn't have a whole lot of retail going on already. At least Madewell (a retailer of women’s apparel, shoes and accessories) is something we haven't seen before.
SouthPark mall is adding several stores beginning this summer — Francesca’s Collections, Madewell, M·A·C Cosmetics, Pure Denim, Journeys and Bakers.

Last year, pervy Woody Allen sued American Apparel, the retailer known for the racy ads, for using his rabbi image from his film Annie Hall on billboards and other advertisements without his permission.
Yesterday, the trash-talking commenced.
According to the NY Post, in his deposition, Allen (who has in the past been associated with sex scandals, including a secret romance with his girlfriend's adopted daughter) called the hipster clothing company's products "low-end" and their ads "sleazy," "adolescent" and "infantile." He wants $10 million.
American Apparel chief Dov Charney says, no way, Jose. (On a side note, Charney has "repeatedly been sued for sex harassment and once reportedly masturbated in front of a reporter.")
More from the NY Post:
In court papers, Charney's lawyers are demanding that the famously neurotic nebbish cough up records to prove his tarnished reputation hasn't hurt his ability to demand a "premium price" for his endorsement."We believe that Mr. Allen's popularity has decreased significantly, especially in light of the scandals he's been associated with," American Apparel lawyer Stuart Slotnick told The Post.
"We believe that he greatly overvalues the worth of his endorsement -- if he can get one."
Ouch.
Soon, you won't be able to find a Ritz Camera Centers-owned store in Charlotte. Get out to the Wolf Cameras while you can during their liquidation sales. If it's anything like the Circuit City closings, all the good stuff is going to go early.
The Maryland-based camera retailer will cease operation of its Wolf Camera shops in Bank of America Plaza at 101 S. Tryon St. and at the Shoppes at University Place at 8925 J.M. Keynes Drive in Charlotte. In addition, it will close a Concord store at Carolina Mall at 1480 U.S. Highway 29 North.
Ritz is holding liquidation sales as part of its reorganization efforts under Chapter 11 protection.
