Vicente Carrillo Leyva, a suspected Mexican drug trafficker, was hauled in front of the cameras last week after his arrest — wearing a natty white track suit with the Abercrombie logo prominently displayed on his chest. The accused leader of the Juarez cartel was seized while jogging.

A new store, very brightly colored, has opened in Founders Hall.

People.com reports that the Obamas gave the Queen an inscribed iPod fully accessorized and loaded with the "ultimate Broadway" collection of 40 tunes. How very hip!

News More of the same: Belk announces 2008 loss

Back where I'm from (Augusta, Ga.), Belk went out of business a long, long time ago. Not that I'm saying that's going to happen here, but here's the latest from the Charlotte-based retailer:
The Charlotte-based retailer today reported a net loss of $213 million for the 12 months that ended Jan. 31, compared with $95.7 million in net earnings the year before. The 2008 loss is due largely to a $326.6 million non-cash goodwill impairment charge.

News Shop owners band together to find common enemy

It's always refreshing to hear about people banding together and breaking down barriers. In the retail world, the competition can be as fierce as the Final Four going down this weekend. But local shop owners are realizing that in order to fight their biggest enemy — the recession — they've got to look past sales figures to talk to each other and work together.
An e-mail to almost 30 locally-owned stores earlier this year has turned into a barrier-busting, information-sharing network that has caught a few participants by surprise, and helped raise awareness of suspected serial shoplifters.

This is a deal you just can't beat, if you can beat the crowd; only 200 gowns remain.
A rush of e-mails from people curious about leftover, bargain-priced prom dresses means the first “Butler Boutique” will reopen to all comers – not just Butler High students – on Wednesday.The school's Junior Board held the sale Thursday to benefit the Emily Rose Scholarship Fund. The group raised about $800 by selling donated used prom dresses and accessories to students – notably, gowns for no more than $30 apiece.
