Blizzards can't hold me back

Posted By on Tue, Jan 26, 2016 at 1:59 PM

At 5:30 a.m. this past Monday, I tossed and turned with only one thought in my head, “The Panthers are going to the Super Bowl!” Psych! I kid, I kid. I was actually begging myself to go back to sleep knowing I had to get up in two hours. Instead, I was lying there thinking about how tired I was, even after sleeping for what felt like an eternity this icy weekend.

If you were lucky, you missed out on the “blizzard” that hit the East Coast this past weekend.

While I enjoyed every minute of it, there are many others who started experiencing cabin fever as early as Friday evening. I still had to work on Friday (even though my office was closed, which was a bummer) but after getting done early, nothing, not even hunger, stopped me from the most amazing nap.

If you’ve been in Charlotte/North Carolina for a winter then you know everything pretty much shuts down when a winter storm hits. Not to mention, every gallon of milk and loaf of bread is snatched up at least two days prior.

As such, you can imagine nightlife can be a drag during this season. After all, no one is cute when they’re falling, and definitely not on ice.

Still yet, the boyfriend — who swears he can drive under any conditions — and a couple friends managed to make the weekend a success.

The first hangover of 2016

Posted By on Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 1:24 PM

Last weekend, I moved into my new condo in Elizabeth. After moving in and out of temporary housing more than 10 times between junior year of high school until now, you would think this would be a cakewalk. Psych!

My mom had been here two weekends in a row and yet there was still so much to do before turning the keys in to my apartment complex office on Sunday afternoon.

A word to the wise: if you decide to hire movers, which I strongly suggest, let them move everything, it will save time in the long run.

After being cooped up in the house with the parental unit — and being forced to adult — for the past two weekends, I was beginning to get antsy. After all, it’s my duty to the Q.C. to party and, truth be told, I had gotten one too many texts asking, “What are you up to tonight?”

Restaurant Week offers the perfect pregame

Posted By on Tue, Jan 12, 2016 at 1:39 PM

If you’ve kept up with my articles, chances are you’ve realized that I’m a foodie. While pizza is my favorite, from the cheapest frozen pizza at Dollar General to Pure Pizza on Central Ave, my taste buds are anything but basic. I’ve been known to spend my lunch break eating $12 crab ravioli (three times a week) from OGGI Ristorante Italiano, mainly because lunch is the one thing I look forward to most in an eight-hour work day. But also because I eat for pleasure much more than I eat for sustenance.

I’ve always been picked on for eating super slow, savoring every bite. And, as with other aspects of my life such as movie-watching, I get on these kicks where I will eat something so often that I literally can’t stand another bite. My most recent addiction was Good Food on Montford. I went four or five times in a matter of weeks and realized I was addicted when I found myself ordering food to go — I didn’t even know it was an option at the small, intimate venue. And I didn’t move on until I got sick after trying green curry mussels.

You can imagine how overwhelming it has been to live in a place like Charlotte where there is a beautiful marriage between local, handcrafted cuisine and chain restaurants. The possibilities are endless! And if you’re a social media enthusiast like I am, you’ve noticed we’re clearly in the age of food appreciation in the Q.C. Everyone, and their mama, is either posting artsy food plate photos from around the city or they’ve started a separate Instagram account showcasing their food journey. And I follow every single one of them.

All of this is to say, I was ecstatic when my boss asked my team where we planned on eating for Queen’s Feast: Charlotte Restaurant Week which takes place January 22-31. If you’re not familiar with this heavenly celebration of food, it’s a great opportunity to explore different restaurants all over Charlotte, especially the more expensive ones. For $30 to $35 a person, you can explore three courses at select restaurants in the Queen City. Whether you’re planning a girl’s night out after work or a hot date, there’s something for everyone during Queen’s Feast.

25 going on 30

Posted By on Tue, Jan 5, 2016 at 2:29 PM

In case you’re wondering, I survived New Year’s Eve celebrations. I ended up on Montford, yet again, with an all-access pass to Southside and Angry Ales for $95. My goal was to drink my money’s worth without being hungover all day long or find myself hugging the toilet before the clock hit midnight.

And somehow, I managed to survive.

My cousin came to visit for the celebrations and extended weekend, so a lot of our time was spent reflecting on our childhood and relationships past.

We laughed about the exes who we thought we were going to spend the rest of our lives with and how we don’t give them a second thought now.

We talked about our fears of having to stay in the dating game for a while and going through early menopause.
Needless to say, we’re not quite where we thought we would be 10 years ago — which we accredit to our partners not being ready for the responsibility.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not necessarily ready for marriage or the five kids that M.A.S.H. — the paper and pencil game we played as kids — predicted. But at the same time, dating in Charlotte has been lackluster.
