Every Wednesday night, local Charlotteans of the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) have begun meet up for a friendly game of kickball at Pearl Street Park. While WAKA has been around for 10 years, this is the first year for a Charlotte division of "The New American Pastime," as they call kickball on their Web site.
Kickball has a ways to go before it becomes America's pastime, though. Ten years is too few to change the nature of a sport that is generally left to the playground and those of us that can get a date by kicking dirt in a girl's eye. I mean, are there really enough experienced kickballers in Charlotte to fill an entire division?
"I'll be honest. I'm the regional rep and I had to have my 12-year-old sister teach me how to kick a ball," said Emah Wright, WAKA's regional representative who started the N.C. Glory Division this year, on how much experience is required. "I mean there is that extreme, and then we have got the people that have played in WAKA since it was founded 10 years ago."
With no experience necessary and no practice schedule, the only requirement seems to be age. Although members tend to fall in the 25-35 age bracket, anyone over the age of 21 is eligible and can sign up individually or with a group of friends.
If registration continues to follow the same trend, Wright expects around four teams for the Glory Division's first season. Games are played every Wednesday at either 7 or 8 p.m. at Pearl Street Park, near downtown, with drinks at CANS Bar and Canteen afterward. The season runs eight weeks starting July 11, followed by two weeks of tournament play.
Official registration ended June 29, but after that anyone interested should contact Emah Wright from the Web site .
