Chamillionaire’s Ultimate Victory

Posted By on Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 1:55 PM

Qiana Martin, an Atlanta-based correspondent for Creative Loafing Charlotte, attended the BET Awards in the “A” a few weeks ago and managed to snag an interview with the Houston rapper Chamillionaire. During an intimate interview in a posh hotel room, Martin asked the MC all the tough questions about the creation of his sophomore album, Ultimate Victory.

Creative Loafing: What experiences influenced you to create the content for Ultimate Victory?

Chamillionaire: Every day I wake up, watch the news and see that the world is a crazy place. That is what made me name this album Ultimate Victory. It is really about appreciating what is really important.

Did you ever have moments of creative frustration making this album, and how did you overcome them?

Yeah, definitely. Because a lot of the time, you want to do what you want to do, but there are label people that want you to do what they want you to do. How I overcame that is I became the executive producer [and] A/R administrator. If I had not had success with my last album, I probably wouldn’t have had as much pull.

What kinds of push back, if any, have you received regarding the release of a clean, consciously responsible rap album?

I think any response that was even viewed as negative, I really didn’t view as negative. I think there was one with people saying 50 Cent [said] something, but I just know how 50 cent answers questions. He just answers questions in a raw way. I actually had a chance to speak with him, and I know that he didn’t really mean anything by it. For the most part, I have been getting a pretty good response from the fans. I think it’s because people really know that is me [and] that I am being genuine with who I am. It’s not like I’m trying to be something that I am not.

Fans want songs that can speak to a particular situation or moment in their lives. So, when I give you a scenario, I would like for you to give me the track or tracks off of Ultimate Victory that will satisfy the situation:

Club Bangers/Club Dress Rehearsal? (You know, the music you play when you get ready for a night out on the town?)

“Rockstar” featuring Lil Wayne, “Industry Groupie.”

Workout/Stay-on-the-Hustle Motivators?

“Won’t Let You Down.”

Self-Reflection/Puff-n-Pass?

“Pimp Mode,” “Ultimate Victory.”

Lyrical Dexterity with a dash of humor?

“Standing Ovation,” “Comeback to the Streets,” “The Ultimate Vacation.”

Riding the Block/Hear-Me-Before-You-See-Me?

“Standing Ovation,” “Won’t Let you Down,” “Pimp Mode.”

If I were meeting you a year from today, what will have to happen for you to feel that this album was an ultimate victory?

The response of my fans telling me that they really liked the whole, entire album. That is what I want.
