Breaking it down old school at the CIAA

It's clear that the first few days of the CIAA basketball tournament is strictly old school. Emphasis on the old. Take the dance contest during half time of Tuesday's contest between Johnson C. Smith and St. Paul. A line of old school CIAA fans got in a Soul Train line at half court and did some of their old school dance moves. The lady from Bowie State University moved her feet and hips like the Godfather of Soul and she did it in stilleto boots. You go girl — er — ma'am. But the crowd really went wild when an old man from Fayetteville State dropped down and did a spilt. He only did it once, though. The lady from JCSU made the crowd scream when she dropped it like it was lukewarm. (I'm sure at her age, her hotness comes in flashes).

There's nothing like Old School CIAA fans. The old men sitting around not giving a damn how they look, laughing so loud that you have to look at them. Sometimes they sound as if they're having a heart attack and you want to check and see if they're all right. But as soon as the Virginia State University cheerleaders, also known as the Woo-Woos, walk by and the old men get all googly eyed, you know that they're just fine or someone popped a Viagra.

The people who get to the Tournament on Monday, they have their own name — they're the Ultra Grown and Sexy. For 51 weeks out of the year, they're grandparents, parents or even great grandparents, but this week, they are back in their element, wishing for younger days as the women with their fresh outfits and hair dos walk by. You might not see the Ultra Grown and Sexy at a $35 party, but you can catch them at Mert's chomping down on soul food, shit their doctors probably told them to avoid.

Last night's game was strictly old school. Even the announcer was old as dirt. They say Al Roseboro is the voice of the CIAA, and since this is the 63rd tournament, that must make Mr. "That's a Turnover" about 118 years old.

And by the way, JCSU women's basketball team won the quarterfinal game.
