Heard in passing ...

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 2:21 PM

You ever hear the end of a really horrible conversation while walking down the street? I heard this as I passed a couple on 6th and Tryon:

"I don't know what I'm gonna do with my son if I have to go to jail ..."

Damn.

The Turbanator

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 1:34 PM

When Barack Obama responded recently to criticisms from Hillary Clinton by saying the presidential race had reached "the Silly Season," he didn't know it was about to get a lot sillier. Yesterday, the rightwing, and frequently unreliable, "Drudge Report" political blog posted a photo of Obama looking like Taliban Santa, wearing traditional Somali clothing. Drudge claimed the picture, which was taken during an official trip to an ethnic Somali area in Kenya, was sent by the Clinton campaign. The implication was that Hillary's people were trying to smear Obama by connecting him with ... what, exactly? Islam? Terrorism? Kickbacks from Kenyan turban exporters? It's actually unclear what point the Clinton folks wanted to make — if, that is, they sent Drudge the photo at all, which, of course, they deny.

Harry Taylor files

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Harry Taylor was at the Board of Elections an hour ago to file as a candidate for Congress. Taylor, you may remember, was the guy who told Bush he should be ashamed of himself. Some of us at the Loaf — OK, me — have made little secret that we liked the move, and in 2006 we made him our Best Of local hero.

Whatever you think of his politics, Taylor seems like a genuinely nice, decent guy. Even some Republicans I know think so. But can he win in U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick's heavily Republican district? We'll see.

It's more than just a shopping cart

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Congratulations to josieposie33, a local user of the Flickr Web site and fan of both The Light Factory and Creative Loafing. Her photograph Stray Shopping Cart was selected out of more than 30 submitted for The Stray Shopping Cart project, whereby creative Charlotteans (and the world at large) were charged with finding and photographing stray shopping carts. The idea started with Buffalo, N.Y.-based artist Julian Montague, who not only created The Stray Shopping Cart Project, but developed an elaborate classification system based on the situations of each unique cart he discovered (www.montagueprojects.com and www.strayshoppingcart.com). An exhibition of his work was held this winter at The Light Factory. Thanks to all who submitted their photographs – the decision was difficult! See all the great photos on Flickr by joining The Light Factory and Creative Loafing’s Stray Shopping Cart group.

Oxnard school shooting: In Oxnard, Calif., 15-year-old Oxnard Junior High School student, Larry King, was killed for admitting he was gay. Bullying and teasing of King lasted for months after he revealed his homosexuality. The teasing ended that fatal day in English class when Brandon McInerney shot King in the back of the head twice. Mclnerney is being charged as an adult for first-degree murder and a hate crime. He could get 50 years in prison if convicted. Rumor around the school was King had a crush on Mclnerney, and that may have been his motive for killing King.

Clinton campaign starts 5-point attack: Sen. Hillary Clinton sarcastically mocked Obama's message of hope as naïve, after Obama distributed anti-Clinton fliers about the NAFTA trade treaty. What survivor Yuri Kochiyama can teach us

Posted By on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Nearing 87 years old, Yuri Kochiyama lives in a small room in an Oakland, Calif., senior living facility. Her walls are adorned with photos, posters, postcards and mementos detailing a living history of the revolutionary struggles of the 20th century. She is quiet, humble and small, and has trouble at times retrieving the right word. Yet, with a sparkle in her eyes, she has no trouble recalling the incredible history of the struggle for social justice in the 20th century. She recalls the history not from books, not from documentaries, but from living it, on the front lines.

When will gas prices relent?: Charlotte gas prices rose over the last two weeks and experts can not predict what will happen next to the prices. Regular fuel sold for about $3.13 per gallon on Feb. 24, according to AAA Carolinas. That is a $1 more than last year. There is no definite answer as to why prices are on the rise.

Beefed-up security today at Butler High: After an unknown projectile shattered a front window of Butler High School on Feb. 22 at about 1:30 p.m., it was decided to add extra security on Feb. 25. Matthews police Sgt. Dave Harrington and CMS Deputy Superintendent Maurice Green came to this decision. Harrington said they will also secure nearby areas.

CIAA Tournament kicks off Monday in Charlotte; plans to stay through 2011: On Feb. 25 the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament starts. Most uptown hotels are sold out. Last year the event brought over 26,000 out-of-town visitors, some were top name celebrities. The CIAA also brought $28 million to the Charlotte economy last year. CIAA commissioner Leon Kerry told The Associated Press on Feb. 24 that the league agreed to a three-year extension making Charlotte home to the CIAA until 2011.

CIAA: The calm before the storm

Posted By on Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 4:06 PM

Today, downtown Charlotte seems eerily quiet and calm.

Just think, in a few days Uptown will be mobbed by thousands of folks out to have good time at the basketball tournament or any of the dozens and dozens of parties going down this week.

That said, we at CL will be covering the whole thing with zeal. Tomorrow, check your local CL street box or stand for our latest issue; in it, we offer a guide to best stuff going down during  CIAA. Also, make sure you check the CLog frequently this week for regular coverage of the tournament and all related fun.

Lastly, we're co-sponsoring a few parties  this week:

  • Wed., Feb. 27, we're teaming up with The Sol Kitchen to bring back our much-loved Pop Life event for a one night stand. This event will feature art, film, free food, drink specials, cool people and the most eclectic blend of music in the whole damn city. And it's FREE. It all pops off at Prevue, 2909 N. Davidson (in NoDa).

  •  Thursday we bring DJ BroRabb to Buckhead Saloon (201 E. 5th Street). Cover is $15 and it starts at 9 p.m.

  • Then on Friday, we're joining forces with The Sol Kitchen again, to bring Biz Markie and friends to Charlotte's best new nightclub, HOM (116 W. 5th St.). Visit www.thesolkitchen.com for more info.

At any rate, get ready. An ass-load of fun is only a few days away.
