Backers of Proposition 8, the California Constitutional measure defining marriage as between a man and a woman, barely had a moment to enjoy their victory before opponents began filing lawsuits. Several groups religious organizations, gay-rights advocates, and even local governments have joined in efforts to overturn the measure.
On Monday, a state Supreme Court spokeswoman said the court could rule as early as this week on one of the lawsuits. Proposition 8 won't be overturned easily. Support was widespread in much of the state. That hasn't stopped countrywide grassroots protests. Several protests are planned for Saturday in North Carolina and elsewhere. More than 270 people have indicated on a Facebook event page that they plan to attend the protest ... we'll see how it turns out.
