Why do you 'Krawl'?

Posted By on Mon, Jun 8, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Gallery crawls. NoDa has them. Dilworth/Southend has them. Plaza-Midwood has them. Are there too many? Not enough? How late and big should they be? Why do you "Krawl"?

Plaza Midwood business owners have debated answers to these questions for the past year. At a recent planning meeting, tensions rose as we discussed the next Krawl and someone made the accusation that some businesses do nothing but offer cheap wine to lure customers to shop. Well, the next Plaza-Midwood Krawl is scheduled for June 13, from 7 p.m.-11 p.m., and we are hoping to have more than just cheap wine.

Here is some of what’s happening that night:

• The Plaza Midwood Library — Live music with Lunch Money, indie-rock for children. Lunch Money sings about things such as wishing for a pet dog, getting up the nerve to ride a roller coaster, and twirling around in rain and sun beneath an umbrella. The band’s goal is to get children and their parents dancing, thinking and laughing.

• Pura Vida Worldly Art — Cheap wine, live music and art by two Colombian artists: 1) Pablo Zapata, whose work has been featured throughout South America and the United States; and 2) Nico Amortegui, founder of Blu magazine, a publication focusing on fashion, art and Charlotte street culture. Nico will showcase eight original pieces inspired by fashion. (FYI: I own this shop.)

• Queen’s Gallery — Realism Found, Charlotte Artists Find New Meaning in an Old Tradition, an art exhibit featuring eight local artists.

• Common Market — Live music with hip-hop troupe, Kid Monsterz.

• Breathe-Bodywork — Art by Stefan Duncan.

• Snug Harbor — Live Music with M.E.G.O. and Drat.

• Corner of Thomas and Central — DJ George Brazil and local artists selling everything from purses and jewelry to paintings and photography. Local artists will also be in front of Pura Vida Worldly Art and Tribal Wisdom.
