Redlair Farm and Forest, in Gastonia, is a 730-acre private nature preserve where you and yours can enjoy many miles of hiking trails, some of which are along the South Fork River. This Saturday, the Catawba Lands Conservancy is holding its annual meeting there at 10 a.m. Feel free to attend. It's a great opportunity to find out what the organization is all about.
Then the real fun begins! From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., all are invited to enjoy the 3rd annual Redlair NatureFest. An 8K trail race, guided hikes and paddling trips are also on the agenda.
Note: You must register early for the race, some paddling trips and some hikes. While some events are already booked, there will be additional hikes to sign up for the day of the festival. With the exception of the Redlair Odyssey hike, which is several hours long, the hikes will last an hour and a half and are easy to moderate in intensity. So, if you want to hike, wear good shoes and bring your water bottle. Those interested in paddling call Heike Biller, at 704-342-3330 ext. 210, to make your reservation.

I went last year and, frankly, can't wait to go back. It's not a big festival, but it is one of my favorites. The event features environmentally conscious vendors, people and demonstrations. I particularly enjoyed seeing the winners of Charlotte Parent Magazine's "A Greener City A Greener World" art contest. All-in-all, the people were gracious, the land is beautiful, the food was good. This year, I'm looking forward to participating in one of the habitat hikes with friends and family.
I hope to see you at Redlair NatureFest. Until then, here are some of the photographs I took at last year's festival:
