News Kids more violent, but graduating

Uh, yea? Is this good news, because it doesn't really sound like good news ...

Fewer students are dropping out of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, but on-campus violence is growing, according to N.C. data.CMS’s dropout rate declined to 4.15 percent for the 2009-10 academic year, according to the Department of Public Instruction, down from 4.99 the previous year. A total of 1,637 students left dropped out, compared to 1,976 in 2008-09. The decline was the fourth straight recorded by CMS, which had a 6.39 rate in 2006-07. The number of expulsions and short-term suspensions in CMS also fell, according to state data.

The findings are part of an annual report on dropouts and violence in public schools, which rose in CMS. The number of violent acts rose to 107 from 62 to 107 last year, and eight schools were deemed persistently violent, up from five a year ago. Ten acts are identified as violent by state data, which include assault, use of a weapon and sexual offenses.
