Winston-Salem Mom makes biodegradeable toys, dishes

Yet another example of one person making a huge, very cool difference:

Valerie Lecoeur's goal to "mother" nature keeps her company, Zoë b Organic, growing.

The company, based in Winston-Salem, sells and manufactures sustainable, BPA-free, organic products for children.

This summer, the "green mom" began selling what she said are the world's first biodegradable beach toys: a shovel, two cups, a sifting lid and a bucket.

"I'm really proud of these, because plastic pollution in the ocean is really a big problem," Lecoeur said. "It's really sad, because millions of tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year."

She said regular plastic from petroleum never goes away, that it breaks down into smaller pieces that are ingested by marine animals.

"It's killing thousands of animals a year," she said.

This month, Lecoeur will start selling her Fantastic Anti-Plastic Dishes, which she said are the first of their kind to be made from corn but are dishwasher-safe.

"With the same bioplastic, we are looking to do biodegradable place mats," she said. "We're working on flatware."
