The Knight Foundation is partnering with Opera Carolina to offer free opera tickets, but the tix are on a first-come-first-served basis, so if you're a fan, you'd better get them while you can.
This news got me all atwitter because I love the opera, though I often have a difficult time convincing friends to go along because of their preconceived notions. Let me squash them:
* The opera isn't as stuffy as you'd think; in fact, it's not stuffy at all. People don't arrive covered in fur and diamonds, they dress in a variety of outfits — some play dress up, others come in jeans. No one bats an eye either way.
* Yes, operas are usually sung in another language, such as Italian, but there are subtitles, so you won't get lost. There's also a printed synopsis of the story distributed before each performance.
* Operas are not boring, not in the least. They're dramatic and often funny ... and very creatively produced.
Since you can go for free, why not expand your horizons and give the opera a shot?
Here's a snippet from the press release from the opera so you can get the 411 on tickets:

Here's a bit from one opera company's interpretation of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." Opera Carolina's interpretation will probably be different. But, just so you can get a feel for it, check this clip out:
