He is Legend at Tremont Music Hall tonight (8/15/13)

Finally, after a lengthy hiatus, North Carolina's He is Legend has begun its return. Crossing the line between dirty Southern metal and progressive rock, the Wilmington-born band boasts an aggressive sound that's further animated by intense live performances. Deep-driving bass and frontman Schuylar Croom's near-animalistic screeches seamlessly weave themselves through heavy drumming and melodic hardcore to create a catchy, sort-of-new metal. With intermittent singing of clever nuances and hooks, Croom's vocals help broaden He is Legend's appeal beyond that of metal heads. Besides the vocal interplay, the band distinguishes itself through an album progression and structure that rivals most local acts. Since 2004's I Am Hollywood, He is Legend has refined its style and songwriting to create tracklists that progress with impressive narrative structure as well as instrumentals. With Stone City, The Seduction. $12-$15. Aug. 15, 8:30 p.m. Tremont Music Hall, 400 W. Tremont Ave. 704-343-9494.
