Year of the Ox, Stone City, The Seduction, POW
“Heavy rock/stoner metal from Charlotte, N.C. Twin guitars, soaring vocals, big riffs and crushing sounds.” So reads the short and sweet description on Year of the Ox’s Facebook page. And really, I can’t quibble with it. Replete with sludgy power-chord riffs, bass drum and Sabbath-inspired vocals, that’s exactly what it sounds like. And with track titles like “The Raven King” and “Kingdom of Lost Hope,” the band has fallen neatly in step with the doom and gloom grandiosity that characterizes its genre. Year of the Ox dropped its debut EP just shy of a year ago and have since been active in the local scene, playing with the likes of Greevace and Base of Bass. Its brand of tunage runs the risk of reading as a little cheesily self-important, what with all the lyrics about carrion and suicide and such, and Year of the Ox does fall into that trap at times. But hey, if you’re into guitar heroics fit to soundtrack an action movie version of Dante’s Inferno, this’ll light up your pleasure centers just fine. (Rachel Bailey)
