I love the different gimmicks BAR Charlotte uses to draw in crowds. They've hosted mini Britney and mini Lady Gaga come on, can you seriously do better than that? Tonight, they'll be hosting the "Mr. Puni-verse" contest. Go out and support the scrawny men of Charlotte by the end of the night, one of them will be $300 richer.

I know Wednesday is one of the biggest partying nights in the Q.C., with overwhelming crowds at The Forum, Halo and Suite for their college nights, and Pop Life at Luna Lounge, and damn the weather for being rainy, cold and windy.
For those of you who live down south, why risk that drive to Uptown to party when you can get it on in your own neighborhood? Just head out to Cosmos' Ballantyne location for their inaugural I Love the 90s Night.

The annual Jingle Bell Ball, now in its 15th year, is held on the second Friday of December as a charity event to raise money for United Family Services' Shelter for Battered Women in Charlotte. Doesn't that just make you feel all warm and toasty inside?
Well, here's a heads up. Now through Dec. 4, tickets are available for $65. Afterward, in order to get into this fancy-schmancy charity shindig, you've got to shell out $75. But hey, it's all for a good cause. Price of admission comes with two drink tickets (and of course there's going to be a cash bar), light hors d'oeuvres from Blue restaurant, live entertainment with the New South Players and a silent auction.
Write it in your calendars: The event will be held Dec. 11 at Grand Central, 1000 Central Ave., from 8 p.m.-midnight. Tickets can be purchased at Just Fresh (1231-A East Blvd.) or online.

Warning: If you experience symptoms of lightheadedness, dizziness, or racing pulse while at Cosmos Cafe, please put down the martini menu listing 57 martinis and just have the server recommend you a drink. It's for your own good.
This week, the tapas restaurant celebrates its 12th anniversary. To show its appreciation for all the customers who have supported the restaurant all these years and to maybe lure in some new regulars Cosmos will be offering $12 three-course meals and $12 featured bottles of wine all this week, starting today. (Click here for menu items.)
In addition, they'll be hosting an array of events this week, in addition to the regular weekly specials, like Miller Lite Monday, Half-priced martinis on Wednesday and Latin Night on Thursday. "Were having an Elevate [magazine] party on Wednesday," General Manager Tim Arnett says. "Were bringing in guest DJs pretty much Wednesday through Saturday. We're also talking to Budweiser about doing giveaways football tickets, basketball tickets, maybe a concert on Friday. Saturday is our Cosmos Fusion, where we have the live belly dancers, sort of an international flair that night. We will be bringing in guest DJs for that night as well."
Since moving to Charlotte (from Atlanta) a little more than three years ago, my biggest complaint about the Queen City is that the place lacked a lot of cool-looking spaces. I won't name any spots here, but I've been pretty damned underwhelmed by the interiors of many of the city's supposedly hip restaurants, nightclubs and lounges. Honestly, a lot of locales here just seemed content to be raggedy little jook joints.
All that being said, I'm happy as hell to report that when it comes to the city's approach to design things are changing. And I saw two examples of this change this weekend when I visited the new eatery The Liberty and the new art gallery/lounge Twenty-Two.
I popped in The Liberty on Friday. The restaurant (which opened nearly one month ago) is situated on South Boulevard (where the now-defunct McIntosh's used to reside) not too far from my home, so I had been curiously passing it for months as it went through major renovations. Well the renovations paid off ... big. As soon as I walked in, I was smacked in the face by the look of the place chocolaty-brown hues and giant white lettering splashed on the walls, rustic wood panels floating above tables, columns made of beer kegs, amber-colored lights peppered about the room, and more cool-looking stuff.
Oh, and while this NOT a review of the food at all (I'll leave that to our food critic), I did dig the vittles. The menu (of the gastro-pub variety) seems to be filled with adventurous dishes. And, yo, they make their own pickles. Can't beat that.
Saturday, I took a trip to Twenty-Two; like I said a few paragraphs up, it's an art gallery/lounge that lives where the old Lotus store used to be right below Soul Gastrolounge. The folks behind Twenty-Two have been tinkering with this place for a loooonnngg time, but their efforts paid off because it looks amazing. The entire space appears wide open with walls pretty much made of glass. (So, like, if you drive by on Central, you can see everything going on inside.) Inside, the concrete floors are coated with a shiny glaze, the non-glass walls are covered with paintings and the bar area appears to be encased in stone. The whole look is modern, but still cozy. (One gripe: Turn up the music ... please?) This latest addition to Plaza Midwood adds even more value to an already cool neighborhood. I look forward to regularly downing big-ass bottles of Fat Tire at Twenty-Two and then climbing the stairs up to Soul (which also looks amazing inside) to sip on some sparkling sake.
So, yeah, things and places are looking up (and better) in the Q.C. Get off your butt and go see for yourself.
