Jesse Metcalfe coming to Charlotte

Posted By on Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Make a note on your calendars, ladies ...

Jesse-Metcalf-at-Suite

On a side note, what's up with celebrities hosting parties at clubs nowadays? I know Jesse Metcalfe will BANK off his appearance at Suite, but what's the attraction in it for patrons, anyway? Will girls go out to Suite that night for the sheer pleasure of being able to say they were in the same room as him? It's a mystery to me ... But if you're a Desperate Housewives fan, this might be your cup of tea.

What a lovely way to spend Valentine's Day — completely trashed on top-shelf liquor at a semi-formal event, all for a good cause.

The Ninth Annual Charlotte Bartender’s Ball will be held Sunday, Feb. 14 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Blake Hotel, 555 McDowell St. Tickets are $60 before Jan. 15, $70 thereafter. I've always thought alcohol and politics don't mix, but that's just me.

If you're think a healthy dose of political talk and a heavily poured glass of wine mix, you should check out Drinking Liberally, an "informal, inclusive progressive social group" that meets every first and third Wednesday each month. Their first meeting of the year is tomorrow night at Dolce Vita at 7 p.m.

Last year they met at Dolce Vita, located in NoDa and where you can get a glass of wine half-priced, regularly, but this year the organizers plan to move their meeting spot around "to keep things interesting and fresh." They also plan to move around the meeting day during the week to give people who are otherwise preoccupied on Wednesdays a chance to come be a part of the discussion.

Click here to check out their Facebook page.

A Halo of a New Year's Eve tale

Posted By on Mon, Jan 4, 2010 at 6:36 PM

As 2009 came to a close and 2010, or as the AP pronounces it, “twenty-ten,” rang in, I was lost in a sea of people, flashing lights and loud drunkenness at Halo. And now that I’m sober and reflecting back on the past year, I hope that my new year is just like that: full of life.

By the time my boyfriend and I arrived at Halo (located at the NC Music Factory if you hadn’t heard by now) Thursday night for their Eyes Wide Shut New Year’s Eve party, all of the general admission tickets were sold out. The only tickets they had available were VIP, and VIP meant you were going to be shelling out $100 to get in. If I knew how to whistle, I’d have done so when we heard that. Needless to say, many of the people who arrived at 11 p.m. hoping to pay at the door the $40 charge (advance tickets were $25 the night before) left. Where they went, I have no idea. I hope they didn’t end up ringing in the new year in a cab or something.

Of course, the venue was packed full of people, but it was a manageable kind of crowd. Sources say the EpiCentre was crazy and that traffic in Uptown was horrible, so I have to say I’m happy with my choice for NYE partying. I hate trying to two-step in a club and end up bumping into people; what’s worse is bumping into sweaty people who might have broke it down a little too hard on the dance floor, if you know what I mean. But that wasn’t the case at Halo, for which I’m grateful.
