Misc. United Family Services looking for rape crisis volunteers

When a sexual assault happens, the victim needs more than just a police officer to take his or her statement and capture his or her assailant.
That person needs a strong shoulder to lean on, and United Family Services wants you to provide that shoulder.
The group is looking for volunteers to serve as rape crisis companions. United Family Services’ volunteer coordinator Joey Honeycutt said rape crisis companions man the 24-hour rape crisis hotline, which UFS operates.
“A rape crisis companion is a volunteer who provides crisis counseling and support and information and referral services to victims of sexual assault who contact the hotline, as well as hospital accompaniment to the victims,” she said.
To become a rape crisis companion, Honeycutt said a person must go through training.
“We have a 30-hour comprehensive training,” she said. And starting next week, training begins for a new set of volunteers. “It’s three Wednesday night sessions that are two hours and three Saturday sessions that are eight hours. The training focuses on the basics of rape and sexual assault. Victim experience, basic crisis counseling, legal and medical procedures that sort of thing.”
While Honeycutt said that it takes at least 30 people to man the hotline to ensure that all shifts are covered, the more people who want to sign up, the better.
“No number would be too many,” she said. “We tell our volunteers, once they’ve completed training to commit to a minimum of one year of service, signing up for two 12-hour shifts per month of covering the hotline.
Right now, Honeycutt said there are 26 rape crisis companions covering the hotline.
Volunteers must have access to a phone, their own transportation and get to the hospital when called in at least 30 minutes, though Honeycutt said there is some flexibility with that if a person lives further away from a hospital.
UFS will hold its next Rape Crisis Companion training in the Cabarrus County office on May 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, and 29. Wednesday night training sessions will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday sessions will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Training is comprehensive, so trainees must attend all sessions.
The training sessions are open to individuals in Mecklenburg County who are interested in providing support and resources to victims of rape and sexual assault through the agency’s rape crisis hotline and hospital accompaniment. The agency also needs male Rape Crisis Companions to work with male sexual assault victims and Companions who speak Spanish.

Two things happen when women and male strippers come together: screaming and excitement. So, what better time than Mother’s Day to have a "ladies lock-up"?
That’s what M.L. Benjamin is banking on this weekend. Saturday, she’s bringing “A Taste of Chocolate” to The Blvd, located at 3500 E. Independence Blvd. Benjamin spoke to Creative Loafing about the event and what women can expect from the male dance (read: strippers) troupe, The Body Snatchers.
Creative Loafing: For those who don’t know, what is a ladies lock-up?
Benjamin: Well, we’re bringing in some guys — they’re called the Body Snatchers. We’re going to open the doors at 8 p.m. so that everyone can get in. We’re going to have a DJ playing. The show starts at 9 p.m. and then we’re going to lock the doors. I’m told you can’t let people keep running in and out.
What’s different about your ladies lock-up than others that happen across the city?
We’re going to open it up to everybody and let the men come in — once the show is over.
Women get really excited about these lock-ups, but for someone who’s never been to one — what can they expect?
OK. Let me set the tone for you. We’re going to have VIP right in front of the stage, it’s going to be plush because we’re going to have chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered bananas. We’re going to have Stefan from Slumber Parties (adult toys) there to sell the adult novelties. When the show starts, the men will come out and they will be fully dressed and they will talk with the women, play with the women and entertain them. Then they get down to taking off their clothes and really entertaining them. They will, of course, take some ladies on the stage with them, if they want to come on stage. It’s going to be a good time. It’s going to be really nice.
So, how are the male dancers different from the female dancers?
You know, I really can’t answer that because I’ve never seen the female dancers.
What’s the response to the Body Snatchers been like?
I wish you could see all the different messages that are coming on my phone and all of the different questions. I put up a clip of the Body Snatchers and their website so that people could go and take a look at them. They are going to that website, and they are excited about them.
So, how will this night differ from the ladies lock-ups that are hosted at Club Onyx every third Sunday?
A Taste of Chocolate was planned by a woman, catered and designed for women. A man will never know what we want as much as we will.
