Debating homosexuality ... It happens tonight

Posted By on Mon, Nov 1, 2010 at 2:22 PM

There's been a lot of discussion about sexuality around Charlotte these days. There's the Let Love Reign exhibit, which puts a local face on the same-sex marriage debate; it's on display on a billboard and the Gil Gallery in Uptown.

I was quite surprised, however, that Matthews, a quaint and conservative area of Mecklenburg County, would be home to this event:

Is Homosexuality America’s Greatest Moral Crisis?

Debate Tonight: Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and Dr. Michael Brown Debate the Issue of Homosexuality in our Country, in Light of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and Current Cultural Events

Charlotte, N.C.—The capriciousness regarding a potential ban on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy has incited controversy among the Obama Administration, District Judges and U.S. Citizens. The policy, which has been active for 17 years, prohibits homosexuals in the military from discussing or acting on their sexual orientation, as well as forbids military officers from investigating or questioning the orientation of any soldier. This limitation and Mr. Obama’s failed promise to overturn it, in addition to the ever-present issue of homosexual marriage, has created uproar among civil rights activists and gays throughout the country.

In response to the culturally crucial and extremely controversial issue of homosexual rights in America, Southern Evangelical Seminary will be hosting a debate between international best-selling author and speaker Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and Dr. Michael Brown, host of the nationally syndicated Line of Fire radio broadcast, on the issue of homosexuality in our country, as it relates to current cultural issues such as “don’t ask, don’t tell” and the perpetual issue of homosexual marriage. The experts will examine the question—is homosexuality America’s greatest moral crisis?
