North Carolina doesn't have the greatest record when it comes to protecting women. It's a misdemeanor to hit a woman, but a felony to hit an animal. But, a judge in Gaston County got it right this week when he denied the request of a preacher, who is a registered sex offender, to be removed from the sex offender registry because it is hurting his ministry.
According to NewsChannel36, Thomas Lee Cavender, a Bessemer City pastor, has been on the registry for a decade.
The women wept Monday afternoon as they described memories of molestation and pleaded with a judge to keep Thomas Lee Cavender on the National Sex Offender Registry. The 60-year-old Cavender is a self-described preacher and evangelist who has been on the registry for 10 years after a conviction on sexual battery and a brief stint in prison.
One woman told Cavender she forgave him but didn't want him to become a threat to others.
Gaston County Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell denied Cavenders' request for at least another year.
Score one for North Carolina women.
