Police nab sex offender in rape case

Posted By on Thu, Nov 17, 2011 at 11:20 AM

A registered sex offender is facing rape charges after he allegedly beat and sexually assaulted a woman in the woods near North Graham Street Wednesday.

The Charlotte Observer reports:

Jason Lamont Miller, 38, has been charged with two counts of first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and communicating threats. Police say additional charges could be filed against him after the District Attorney’s office reviews the case.

The rape was the second sexual assault reported in the area in three days. Police haven't identified Miller as a suspect in that case, though a police spokesman said detectives routinely look at a large swath of open cases when a rape suspect is arrested.

According to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, in North Carolina 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives.
