The grand opening celebrations for the new club started last night with their country night, and tonight is George Acosta and Saturday DJ Rush.

And every Thursday is the lake's one and only country night hosted by the one and only Big Sexy from WSOC. Last night Tim Hall & Buffalo Country rocked and honkey tonked. If you missed out, sucks for you ... well, not too much because next week is Brian Davis.

Synergy Nightclub is located where NV Lounge use to be

A different kind of happy hour

Posted By on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 2:15 PM

… a Holistic Healing HAPPY hour. Emphasis on the happy.

My friends all call me a dirty hippie – yes, to my face - but I beg to differ … I’m more like a hygienic hippie. I just prefer holistic medicines over western ones — and not just because the cost of health care is ASStronomical, but because it’s natural and effective in most cases. My primary care physician, Dr. Haas is even a holistic healer.

Well, I took my hippie ass to Healing Hands Clinic for their Acupuncture Happy Hour.

For a mere $10, I got a 15-minute acupuncture treatment on the “5 points in the ear” and 15-minute massage. Now I have gotten a lot of rub downs in my life … as in massages, and that might just be the best one I’ve ever gotten – even if it was just a quickie … again, I am talking about a massage.

It’s like a sample of Chinese medicine — a buffet of health.

Healing Hands Acupuncture and Herbal Clinic serves their holistic healing happy hour once a month, and each one with a different form of modality treatment from yoga to Reiki to massage. The next one is coming up July 14.

Oh, and Adrienne that works there makes the most amazing dip!

Win tickets for Julianne Hough

Posted By on Wed, Jun 17, 2009 at 12:21 PM

Dance with the stars down by the river ... as in Dancing with the Stars star Julianne Hough at Whisky River's anniversary party!

julianne-hough.webp

In order to get into Whisky River tonight you have to either be Julianne Hough, Dale Jr. or a winner of tickets ... and I have tickets you can win. The first person to e-mail me and tell me the name of the drink I invented at Whisky River scores!

She's gone country: Live review of CMA Music Festival in Nashville

Posted By on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 9:31 AM

The Deal

Between The Country Music Association Music Festival in Nashville and Bonnaroo about an hour away in B.F.E., there was a lot of good live music in Tennessee this past weekend.

The Good

Darius Rucker and Kid Rock are now considered country artists. Kid Rock was even the encore act for the concerts Friday night with a line-up including Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Rodney Atkins and Jake Owen. Kid Rock even supplemented Sheryl Crow for Martina McBride. My favorite show was Lady Antebellum … in addition to the 5-year-old who was dancing on the otherwise unoccupied stage earlier at McFaddens.

kid-rock-and-martina.webp

Meanwhile Wynonna Judd had a family reunion on stage with her band-member, her mother. Wynonna arguably has the most soulful voice in country music, though there’s a new minority country singer on the map … well, at least at CMA Fest, and that's Rhonda Towns.

The Bad

It was the Coca-Cola 600 all over again … the concert was put on a rain delay before a drop of rain even hit the ground. They interrupted Reba McEntire during her set to clear the stadium, only to wait over an hour for it to rain on the parade, but pass by as quickly as a parade. The show went on … kinda. Rascal Flatts and Julianne Hough didn’t end up going on, but Hootie did, without his Blowfish. Along with Dierks Bentley, and Brad Paisley who played up until 2 a.m. Julianne Hough will be in Charlotte, however, playing at Whisky River’s one year anniversary party (stop back by on Wednesday for your chance to win a ticket to the concert you can only win tickets to).

And I don’t mean to be mean, but Wynona Judd kinda looked like a villain in Star Trek on stage.

wynona-judd.webp

The Verdict

There is live music everywhere in Nashville. From the stage of LP Stadium to the street corners. There was either live music or karaoke at every bar we went to. There’s even a bar where the bartenders serve you while singing, and a strip club with naked karaoke in Printer’s Alley.

And when did John Rich become the P-Diddy of country music? He even has his own very exclusive and essentially hidden club in downtown Nashville called The Spot where lots of celebrities can be spotted.

From A.M. Mayhem to P.M. Mayhem - Brotha Fred's Adult Skate Party

Posted By on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Go shorty its yo birthday, we gonna party like its your birthday ... Jacinda!

ASaturday, my girl Jacinda, from Brotha Fred's A.M. Mayhem on 96.1 The Beat, is celebrating her birthday ... and you're invited.

sex-and-the-city-premiere-at-birkdale.webp

Last year for Jacinda’s birthday, all she wanted to do was go rollerskating, but Kate’s closed early and we ended up back-up dancing to karaoke at Murphy’s instead. Well, this year they planned ahead …

Saturday is an adult skate party at Kate’s Skate in Indian Trail starting at 11 p.m.

Beer and wine will be served (good luck remaining vertical) and old school music will be played — the kind of skate party us adults use to have when we were kids ... as if we ever actually grow up! Now we just hire a babysitter so we can go act like kids.

Proceeds of this skate soirée will benefit Cystic Fibrosis.

Secrets about the N.C. Music Factory from an insider … as in someone with a desk there

Posted By on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 3:04 PM

The Garden and Gun Club got shot down, and Halo has been planted in its place.

Apparently some lawn jockey magazine in Charleston called the Garden and Gun threw a hissy fit about the Garden and Gun Club sharing its name — and with a slap of a gavel, the Garden and Gun Club had to change its name … to Halo.

Well, to me it’s irrelevant because the whole time it was open I for some reason kept referring to it as the Gun and Garden Club.

Anyway, same scene, same music, same cool patio … but now you can hear the Uptown Amphitheatre from it, starting with The Fray this Saturday.

dsc01663.webp

Aside from a revamped interior, the only difference is now they’re going to have benefit parties and Burlesque shows — the La Petit Mort Burlesque Revue to be exact.

Halo is having its grand opening this Friday for the Global Fever 4 International Party with DJ Nickankis and DJ Kosta X. And right next door is the Fillmore that opens next weekend with Corey Smith.

Taste of Charlotte ... what does Charlotte taste like anyway?

Posted By on Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 12:02 PM

I felt inclined to check out Taste of Charlotte considering there was an emcee, karaoke contest, “Dance your @$$ off” dance party, the “Little Blue Choo Choo” and a Single Ladies dance off with the Lady Cats right outside my window luring me outside.

And further down Tryon there was an inflatable mechanical bull, a rock climbing wall, a “Frik-N-Frak” booth and an entire bathroom display with actual tubs and showers ... Random. It was like a mixture of an N.Y.C. street fair and Speed Street.

other-white-meat-tour.webp

The most interesting thing at Taste to me was the “Other White Meat Tour” … a tour?! For some reason this doesn’t make me just think of pork — but it does make me wonder, what is the other white meat? ... Spanish? And chicken could essentially be the other dark meat, right?

Saving the world, one event at a time

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2009 at 2:53 PM

What better to do this weekend than to save the world?

Friday night The Chuckleheads will make you chuckle for charity.

The Chuckleheads will kick off the "Friday Night Funnies Comedy Series" at City Cafe Restaurant, 128 S. Main St. in Mt. Holly, with a charity show benefiting the Community Relief Organization. Show starts at 8 p.m. and admission is free but donations are accepted. The Community Relief Organization (CRO) of Mt Holly is an organization created and supported by local churches to help those less fortunate by providing food and other items.

Also on Friday, there's a charity event in Rock Hill. Country singer Chris Young — he's a Nashville Star winner — will be performing two shows at the Long Branch Saloon for a benefit for the SCLEOA. Tickets are $12 and it's going on at 7 and 10 p.m.

misas-eblast-std-530.webp

And on Saturday you can be a shopping saint in Misa's Closet, a consignment sale at The Residence at SouthPark (Penthouse 529) with the sale benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Misa's Closet will be a consignment sale created by Misa Hylton, award winning fashion stylist and the creative mind that developed iconic images such as Mary J. Blige, Little Kim, Lisa Raye, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Kimora Lee, Fat Joe and 50 Cent, to name a few. There will be an admission fee of $25 for the VIP Pre-Sale from 10 a.m. to noon and $5 for the public sale from noon - 4 p.m. any items that do not sell will go to "Dress for Success" Charlotte.

And on Sunday there's a Festival of Hope in loving memory of Hope Stout at Beantown Tavern at the Fountains (on the corner of Audrey Hell and Tom Short) from 2 - 6 p.m. with live music from The Wax Gurus.

Meanwhile, Pops in the Park and the Marshall Park Music Festival both start this Sunday. Party in the parks with jazz music by day at Marshall park and the Charlotte Symphony by night at Symphony Park.

There's Good Food, and ghosts, on Montford

Posted By on Thu, Jun 4, 2009 at 12:00 PM

I went to check out Good Food on Montford, which was, well … good food on Montford. Between the recently opened Brazwells and it's new next door neighbor Good Food on Montford, Montford Drive is transforming from Dive Drive to Divine Drive.

good-food-sign.webp

Good Food is a global tapas place and, let me just say, the food was an orgy in my mouth and a party on my platter. They have a cheese plate that will make you salivate …

But there’s something about turning around and seeing the man that broke your heart sitting with the woman he knocked up somewhere in between waking up with you that can make you lose your appetite. The thought of him watching us sit back to back pretty much made me want to throw up. But then the steamed bun with pork belly and hoisin came out and just looked so good my appetite came back faster than an anorexic's … I mean, it puts Carolina BBQ to shame.

Truth be told Mr. Big, Donnie, Jason, whatever you want to call him, is basically dead to me … so seeing him was like seeing a ghost. And I’m not afraid of no ghosts. Of course he still haunts me, I’m not going to lie and tell you that I didn’t uncharacteristically scour the parking lot for a blue Volvo while I parked because I somewhat sensed his spirit — just like I did right before I randomly bumped into him in Boston and then at the Quail Hollow Championship. I feel like I have a sixth sense or some shit.

But I got there first and sat first, and I didn’t actually notice him until I turned around to look and see who was being an obnoxiously loud drunk behind me ... him. But surprisingly I didn’t feel compelled to throw a drink in his face, or drink to sedate myself from my pain – I was neither sad nor mad, I just felt startled, like I’d seen a ghost. I know that I have to make it past my Caspers in order to live — an exorcism of the heart. But I have come to realize that the only way to free my spirit of my ghost is by doing the unthinkable … forgiving him. Guess you could say I’ve gotten down to the heart of the matter – and I came alive on my trip to Montford Drive.

xoxo ... I love XO

Posted By on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Not as in Patrone XO, but as in the kinda-sorta-new tapas lounge in Lake Norman that just re-opened after getting a make-over and new management. Meanwhile, NV Lounge has new synergy. As in, the owner of NV is now an owner of XO and NV is now called Synergy.

xo-girls.webp

XO kinda reminded me of Soul Gastrolougne in Plaza Midwood – it has a similar tapas menu and sparkling sake. But it’s more of a leather couch kinda lounge. It’s upscale, but not uptight. I rolled through in my swimsuit fresh off the lake and although I was out of place, I wasn’t made to feel that way. I xoxo the staff.

Wednesday is the grand opening, which will include a wine tasting. Speaking of wine, try their red wine ice cream.
