A M King’s 5th Annual “Fill the Truck” Event Benefits Students at Starmount Academy of Excellence

Join us at Starmount Academy of Excellence, 1600 Brookdale Ave., Charlotte, at 4:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 25 for our 5th Annual “Fill the Truck” event. 

For five years, Charlotte-based Design-Build firm A M King has supported Starmount, a Pre-K through fifth grade Title 1 public school where the majority of the school’s 420 students are economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. Each year, our “Fill the Truck” project provides both essential supplies and uniforms to each student at the school’s Open House. Supplies are selected based on current needs and have included everything from crayons and composition notebooks to highlighters and headphones. 

“This is a major event that we look forward to participating in every year,” said A M King Vice President Dan Crist.  “A lot of our employees have children in K-5 schools, so we understand the value of education and how important it is to be prepared. It means a lot to be able to contribute to the community and see the impact we can have on the children and their parents.”

Last year, our call to action related to the development of two labs that aim to guide students toward fundamentals of sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship. A M King volunteers provided select materials for and assisted with construction of components for a MakerLab and a NatureLab program. 

The MakerLAB includes workshop-oriented Gladiator cabinets and tables, four 3D Printers, Lego Competition Robotics Kits, Hummingbird animatronics creation kits and Dremel tools. The NatureLAB includes 14 elevated gardening beds, workbenches, picnic tables, wheelbarrows, hoses, gardening tools, seeds and soil. Starmount Academy asked for A M King’s assistance with these focus areas, in part, in hopes of attracting a high level of parental involvement— which is key to student success.

Starmount staff will be able to share stories about how students have utilized the MakerLab and NatureLab at the Open House or through a scheduled interview at a later date. In addition, A M King’s Vice President Dan Crist will be available for interviews and reporters can see firsthand how our company is making a difference for student families at Starmount. We’re also bringing Buck’s Ice Cream Truck to the festivities, which will serve up a little back-to-school cheer with free, prepackaged Blue Bunny ice cream and freshly made snow cones.
