Out with the old and in with the new? That's the attitude a lot of Uptown partiers have had towards the EpiCentre, leaving some Uptown bars deserted like an old Western movie. I think I actually saw tumble weeds roll down 5th Street.
While there's a line to merely get up the EpiCentre escalator, some of the older bars are in hospice. With the exception of BAR -- that place is like a roach.
EpiCentre is the new kid on the block in Uptown (literally encompassing an entire block) and they've recently opened another bar. PJ's, a wine and coffee bar, a place to "wake up, chill out, and wine down" and have a book club meeting. Also coming soon to an EpiCentre near you -- Strike City, a movie theatre and Mez -- a place to "eat, play and stay."
But the EpiCentre isn't the only place open for business. Cason-Point ...
• Bad Dogs Burgers & Brew in University across from Boardwalk Billy's. There they "like it Doggy Style." Well, we like cheap beer -- and that they supply. They have 99-cent Coor's Light on Thursdays, Tuesday trivia and Madden Tournaments on Wednesdays.
• Lake Norman Sports Grille (formerly Solace) opened up just in time for football season with a theater room and big screens on the patio.
• Latta Pavillion hidden within Dilworth is essentially 131 Main's wine bar.
• The Gun & Garden Club, a dance club in the N.C. Music Factory.
• ALIVE in NoDa bringing us Ryan Cabrera on Nov. 1 and Cassidy on Dec. 6.
• The Tavern on Park on Park and Woodlawn, sharing a complex with Hef's.
Meanwhile, down in the South End ...
• Dharma, an enlightened nightlife that offers zen via yoga and spirits (and hops).
From pancakes to play-offs: 1300 Southend Tavern is a sports bar that replaced The Original House of Pancakes. How they scored with me -- touchdown for turning off the music when the game started and the extra point for having the ambiance of a hole in the wall.
Meanwhile, Nolia in Elizabeth and Andrew Blair's on Montford (aka Dive Drive) are relatively new. With what seems like 56,754 steak houses opening in Uptown it's all hail The King's Kitchen -- a restaurant that will employ the homeless and whose profits go to feed the hungry. Dinner with a side of good karma ... yummy!
With that said, it's in with the new, but we don't want the old out either. But to be honest, I think I am most excited about the Trader Joe's opening up near Target.
