Written during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig and first performed on April 7, 1724, the St. John Passion reveals Bach at his most dramatic and most expressive. This is Bach at “peak rhetorical,” displaying the eagerness and raw emotion of the vocal music he had composed at Weimar, but now with the increased resources available to him in his new post.
