When all is said and done about Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority CEO Tim Newman — the oily glad-handing, the money-laundering to cover up an ethical lapse, the employee-diddling, the unbelievable $300K per year salary, the lavish “gifts” to local politicians and bigwigs, the screw-you attitude toward City Council — one salient fact remains. Newman lied through his gapped teeth about the potential numbers of visitors to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and did not inform Council of that fact before they committed millions of dollars to the ill-fated project. If that’s not criminal, it ought to be. Yes, many Uptown suits played along and hyped the Hall beyond all reasonable expectations, but the principal bullshitter for the project — to the point of withholding vital info from City Council — was Charlotte’s quintessential hustler, Tim Newman.
