EXHIBIT: Protégé

Painter Sam Gilliam, best known for his monumental draped canvases, creates installations that incorporate painting, computer-generated imagery and more. Atlanta-based artist Kevin Cole uses the necktie form to make structures that address essential concepts including the destruction of human life. For 15 years, Gilliam has mentored Cole; see the fruits of this powerful relationship in Protégé at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture.

Admission: $8 adults, members free. Sept. 11-Jan. 9, 2011. 551 S. Tryon St. 704-547-3700. www.ganttcenter.org.
