FESTIVAL: Recess Fest

Saturday, July 10

What person in their right mind didn't love recess? A time to relax the brain from work and play with friends, recess was and always will equate to ultimate fun -- which is probably how local Zach Reader came up with the idea Recess Fest. This event -- aimed at getting folks out to enjoy a fun-filled day of music, art, film and socializing -- will be held on July 10 at a variety of locations around the Q.C. Events include a cookout at Independence Park (300 Hawthorne Lane), a performance by Bob Fields and Red Snapper, as well as the debut of John Appleton's film Effects of Gravity at Century Vintage's Patchwerk Playhaus (1508 Central Ave.), a collection dubbed Post All Bills that showcases posters and fliers from past Charlotte shows at Pura Vida Worldly Art (1521 Central Ave.) and lots of other performances by local and regional acts at nearby spots. • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
