HousingFest is a music festival presented by Urban Ministry center to raise awareness and funds for ending homelessness in Charlotte. Since our inaugural show in 2014, we have raised over $80,000 for the cause, featuring talented artists like St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Josh Ritter, Jim Lauderdale, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Lindi Ortega, Matrimony, The Nikki Hill Band, and Justin Fedor.
This year, we are pleased to transform HousingFest into a month long celebration of excellent live music for a cause. On April 6th, Charlotte band Hectorina will be performing at Snug Harbor where a portion of the night’s proceeds will go toward the cause of ending homelessness. HousingFest Unplugged at Triple C will then be held on April 28th featuring Justin Fedor. Finally, for our biggest event yet, blues legend Buddy Guy and soul icon Mavis Staples will be headlining HousingFest 2018 at Ovens Auditorium on May 10th.
Funds raised through HousingFest supports Urban Ministry Center’s permanent supportive housing programs, where Charlotte’s most vulnerable citizens are provided with housing coupled with access to healthcare, mental health services, and community engagement opportunities. One tenant described, “I have a place of my own and I’m not sleeping on the streets. I have a sense of being in a place that is safe and I can feel responsible. I can work towards getting my life back to normal and feeling that I’m a part of society again, and I can make a difference.”
