Item of the Week: Salt crystal lamps from Ionic Salts

Salt crystal can come from all over the world, but it is primarily found in the Himalayan foothills of central Asia. The Charlotte-based company Ionic Salts uses this material to produce a line of merchandise said to offer many health and aesthetic benefits, including help to improve one's "chi." At present, Ionic Salts carries salt lamps, Himalayan bath salt, peloid mud mask (also containing salt crystals), salt bars, salt bowls and plates, and salt tiles.

The most popular, it seems, are salt lamps. When illuminated, they create a warm environment for your living space, in colors ranging from red and orange to peach and apricot.

"Salt lamps can not only improve ambience and mood by being aesthetically pleasing, but the natural properties of warmed Himalayan salt can improve indoor air quality," says Darren Wright, co-owner and Web developer of Ionic Salts. "Our salt lamps are also known to reduce asthma, airborne allergy triggers, and eliminate snoring."

While Ionic Salts does not yet have a brick-and-mortar location in the Queen City, the company, which has been around for seven years, distributes its products both online and in wholesale markets. $4 to $150. www.ionicsalts.com.
