KENNY ROBY/SAM THE LION
A nice double-bill of dark, moody fare here. Roby’s music probes the darker corners of consciousness in narratives that give voice to our inner thugs, dreamers and reprobates. The former 6 String Drag leader still has a bit of his twangy roots showing, but his latest LP, the terrific Memories & Birds, has more orchestral accents and varying tempos and textures. The stories remain impeccable. Sam the Lion is a new configuration of locals that take their name from a song by the late Rodney Lanier. Before the Sea of Cortez leader passed away in 2011, the instrumental band brought songstress Lindsey Horne on board to play keys and sing on occasion. Now, though, the band — which also features Lanier’s old rhythm section of Chris Walldorf (drums) and Chris Lonon (bass), as well as guitarist Dave Driscoll — builds its music around Horne’s ethereal voice, which drifts over and through the noir-ish melodies and textured soundscapes. Promising stuff that their old friend would surely encourage. (John Schacht)
