Overmountain Men is often referred to as Avett Brothers bassist Bob Crawford’s side project, but the real engine behind this folk fivesome is N.C. songwriter David Childers. While Crawford played bass on the group’s 2010 debut, Glorious Day, he rarely makes appearances with the band, but they’ve continued penning beautiful folk music, at times reminiscent of Irish folk ballads, in his absence. Laced with banjo, fiddle and mandolin, this stuff is rooted in the deep musical traditions of the American South. But Childers, delivering his lyrics in a pleasantly weathered twang, manages to create music that sounds modern and timeless at the same time. (Rachel Bailey)
