You know what they say, right? Everyone who bought a Velvet Underground LP slept with Andy Warhol ... No, wait ... Everyone who heard their music went on to play in the Feelies, Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo or R.E.M ... Shit, that’s not it either. Well, regardless how many early VU listeners went on to form bands after hearing them, there’s no denying Mr. Reed knew his way around a rock song — that is, when he wasn’t sticking his finger in rock’s eye with a Metal Machine Music or “I Wanna Be Black” or that parting-shot duet with Metallica thing. No doubt on this night we’ll hear a “Femme Fatale,” “Candy Says” or “Sweet Jane,” but here’s hoping the fine folks bringing you his music — including some of Charlotte’s best in Benji Hughes, the Sammies, Andy the Doorbum, and Dave & the Strange — toss in some of Reed’s overlooked post-Transformer solo material off Coney Island Baby, Blue Mask or New York. In any case, a welcome tribute to an honest-to-god rock & roll hero. (John Schacht)
