THEATER: Avenue Q

Tuesday, April 5

If Avenue Q was a real spot, it'd be more than a skip and a hop from jolly ol' Sesame Street. In case you mistake one of the show's characters for a muppet, a disclaimer warns they hold "no responsibility for its content." So, just how risqué can this puppet performance be? The answer: See for yourself. I'm not going to sugar-coat the foulness that lies in the mouths of these horny little playthings. Full puppet nudity is just a sample of how Avenue Q has ousted the stereotype that puppets and children go hand in hand. The songs they sing — take for instance "You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)," "I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today," and "The Internet Is for Porn" — reiterate that message. But the story line is heartfelt, revolving around a broke college grad who is forced to move to the slums of New York. Quickly he discovers he's not the only one with issues. His new 'hood friends are all struggling to find jobs, dates and purpose in their lives. $20 and up.
