Looking for apple Charlotte cake in Charlotte? Now you can find it at Ziggy and Marta Zelazko's new Polish market, ZYGMA European Groceries and Deli, 212 North Polk St., Pineville (704-889-9946; www.zygmapolishdeli.com -- in Polish and English). Apple Charlotte, or Szarlotka, is available on Thursdays along with Polish poppy seed cheesecake.
A staple of Polish cuisine, kielbasa is offered in several varieties including starowiejska. More difficult to find is the fresh (as in non-smoked) white kielbasa (biala), which is available daily ($3.99/lb).
In the deli case are Gypsy hams, head cheese (country and beef blood), and white and yellow Polish cheeses. Side cases are filled with pierogies (made in Chicago), blintzes, and Silesian dumplings (large gnocchi). Shelves are lined with jars of pickles, canned pates, jams, teas, chocolates, and cookies, including the delicious dark chocolate-covered, apple-filled gingerbread cookies, Pierniczki Alpejski.
Polish bread is made locally by Depalo Bakery in Pineville. Chleb wiejski (Polish brown bread) is obtainable daily and loaves of multigrain and Zakopianski (seeded) are sold Thursday through Saturday. All are $2.69. Okocim, a popular Polish beer (also in porter), as well as some Czech and Russian beers cost $2.29 per bottle. Polish books, newspapers, and DVDs are on hand. If you can't find it, Marta will try to find it for you. Catering is available.
